Assignment 1: Comparative Analysis of readings from the textbook
Each small group selects five original texts that belong to different traditions (one per tradition).
Each member of the group works on one text – familiarize themselves with the text, with the author (some biographical data and major works), and the school of thought they belong to.
Secondary sources are consulted and assembled in a References list to be attached to the group paper (between ten and fifteen sources).
In the group paper, the five texts are compared and critically discussed in relation to several comparative dimensions:
• How is communication conceived and defined?
• What is the unit of analysis – an individual, group, message, etc.?
• How is the relation of communication to society presented?
• Which are the particular theories of communication that can be traced back to the five traditions? –
The list of comparative dimensions can be extended, and the critical analysis deepened, as a result of the collaborative work of the group – discussions on the approach to the assignment, the paper structure, the conclusions, etc.
