Topic: Circularity (CH 5)
Ch 5, p. 117 of text… Circularity is about addressing environmental sustainability in the business model; It especially affects corporate strategy in the following areas:
Competitive position (compare to others in the industry)
Biz model – how the create value for the customer
Intangible resources (i.e. knowledge, internal systems, relationships with suppliers, vendors, etc)
Overall strategy
The better a company adapts their business model to sustainability issues, the more likely they can be successful in the long term.
Materiality – meaning, find out what matters to your stakeholders, to stay relevant on those issues.
Address the cycle of:
Raw materials—> manufacturing —> goods / residuals / recycled —> trash (“discharged”

Sharing models
Product life extension models
Resource recovery models
Some things to consider:
– Engine No. 1 says Exxon investing in the wrong things, not enough to transition to sustainable future
– Some companies are developing plastics that are more recyclable, products that are more reusable;
– Collaborate with suppliers and/or vendors to ensure more recycling, more sustainable products, etc.
– mention how OG companies invested in recycling in the past, how it kept consumers buying plastic because plastic is “recyclable”…but it all ends up in the dump anyway
.Here some notes that you can consider:
Define circularity in business & product use cycle (notes below have most of this)
Are societies & governments pushing this -> I think yes.
What are oil & gas companies doing to become more circular -> Reduced flaring, more efficient operations, investing in alternative/renewable energy, Carbon Capture, Carbon Sequestration, etc.
It should be noted… that regardless of whether or not oil & gas can become circular, civilization as we know it needs energy to thrive and grow. Unfortunately, renewable and cleaner energy alternatives to oil & gas will take decades of growth to meet the world’s energy needs and be able to fully replace oil & gas.
