On January 1, 1804, Saint Domingue declared its independence from France and changed its name to the Republic of Haiti. This new nation arose out of the largest and most successful slave
rebellion in modern history. At the head of the rebellion for over 10 years was Toussaint Louverture.
Like George Washington, “Papa Toussaint” is often remembered as the father of his country. Louverture
