How would you feel if the odds were always stacked against you?

How would you feel if the odds were always stacked against you? If according to society, you were told, you would never amount to anything. Well, I can tell you exactly how I felt. I am the oldest of 5 children from a single-parent household where alcoholism and chaos were at the forefront. My mother did the best that she could; being; married to an alcoholic was not easy. She was able to put herself through nursing school while working full-time and raising five children. It is from her where I get my strength and resilience. I was not always sure I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I took a Certified Nursing Assistant class through the American Red Cross, where I obtained my certificate; from there I went on to work in a long-term care facility. That is where I knew that I wanted to work in healthcare. I enjoyed being a caregiver and the light in someone’s life that did not have any. I started to take my prerequisites to become a nurse. I was still young and naive at that time and did not give my education the full attention it needed. I found myself pregnant with my son. I took the time to be a mother to him and put my education on the back burner. I knew I wanted more for myself but was unsure how to accomplish that as a newly single parent. I applied to a local college and earned my certificate in Phlebotomy. I started working at my local hospital where I was able to see different departments in the medical field. My desire to become more for my son only grew. I continued to take classes at my local college while securing a job as a medical assistant. In my life, I have experienced loss, trauma, and some mental health issues. I have continued to prevail and always come out stronger than before. Working in the medical field for the past fourteen years, I know in my heart that I want to be in a profession where I can give back and take care of people. My sense of compassion and empathy are great attributes to my personality. I feel that I would make a great Nurse one day and am finally in a position where my education can be the priority it needs.
