INSTRUCTIONS
You will choose a person (past or present) to research for this assignment. You need to choose a person that you can research, so you don’t want to choose a family member or someone you are acquainted with.
Choose a person that you consider to be a critical thinker and you will create an outline of the person’s life and achievements. Avoid choosing someone who is considered immoral and/or criminal; for example, don’t choose Hitler or a serial killer. Although this will not be a formally structured essay, you should still generally follow MLA format and write in complete sentences, avoiding simply presenting bulleted lists. Provide background information (education and family information) on the person, major contributions that the person has made and apply at least 3 critical thinking characteristics to the person–the characteristics of a critical thinker are provided for you in your text in chapter 2. You may also include one moral characteristic–such as altruism or caring for others–as one of your characteristics, as well as creativity, since that is covered in Chapter 1. Otherwise, stick to the list of characteristics provided in Chapter 2 of your book.
Support each characteristic with two specific examples from the person’s life. Also, include a short summary of how these characteristics have contributed to the person’s accomplishments and/or lasting legacy today.
Make sure to include a Works Cited page completed using MLA style. You will need to have at least three sources (Don’t use Wikipedia for this assignment).
Your final paper should be at least 5 pages, to include an MLA works cited page.
You can also find an example of the assignment on Moodle.
Refer to the Outline and Rubric.

Caveats and other possible deductions:
· A paper that is short a source will be penalized 10 points per source.
· A paper that uses an inappropriate subject (a personal friend or family member, for instance) will receive no higher than a D ( and may incur additional penalties due to lack of proper sources)
· A paper that uses Wikipedia or Blogs, will receive no higher than a C.
And automatic failures:
A paper that cites no more than one source or that is submitted without a works cited page will receive an F.
A paper that has no more than two pages of text will receive an F.
And finally—a paper that has been blatantly plagiarized will receive a zero.
Keep in mind that although direct quotations are not required (though it is always nice to credit sources in your text), a works cited page listing the sources you refer to in the text is required. For the most part, you also should use sources from periodicals, journals, and recognized (credible) reference sources or web sites (such as History.com). You may also refer to the Credo and ProQuest databases from the library’s Web page. If in doubt, ask.
