CHANDRA’S SPA &
SALON
Chandra’s Spa and Salon is an upscale beauty
salon and spa located in Upper St. Andrew. The entity caters mainly to up-scale
clients including top business people, models, beauty queens, top athletes and
socialites. They have even catered to celebrities from overseas who visited the

has developed a reputation for providing excellent hair, nails and body care
services.
Owned and operated by Chandra Cunningham, the
ten-year-old business strives on hiring only the best of the best to deliver
its services and represent its brand. In light of a growing demand for its
services Chandra now sees the need to hire more workers. As such, she plans to
embark on a recruitment process to hire additional staff.
Over the past few months, a lot of her clients

Case 3
DEALING WITH COVID-19
Master Cleaners Ltd. is a medium sized business that provides
janitorial cleaning services for many businesses across the corporate area.
Since March 2020 when the pandemic hit, business has been slow because many
companies have either closed their establishment or scaled down the size of
their operations. When business customers call to cancel their cleaning service
contracts or to renegotiate a new contract with lesser terms and conditions,
the reasons are the same – the offices are not being used because most
employees are working from home or they have switched a significant portion of
their business to an online platform.
The cleaning company has been trying their best to keep their business
afloat and to pay their employees their regular wages and salaries. In August
at a staff meeting, employees expressed gratitude to the company’s management
team for their effort in this respect. Most had friends and family who had
already lost their jobs or were receiving only a percentage of their usual
wages and salaries.
Last week, the accounting team met with the company’s managing
director Jarrod Chambers and the Human Resource Manager Lorna Grant to outline
Master Cleaners’ current financial situation. It is clear that in the face of
declining revenues changes will have to be made. If the company is to remain
viable it must embark on a major cost-cutting exercise and wages and salaries
represent the biggest cost to the company. Lorna Greene has some serious
decisions to make and has decided that the first step must be to engage in a
human resource planning exercise.
QUESTIONS:
Explain
why Lorna Grant feels that before any decisions can be made with regards
to staff she must engage in a human resource planning exercise. (5 marks)
