Human Resources for Law Enforcement and Corrections
Research Paper Guidelines
Steps in preparing your paper
I. Introduction
Your
research must contain at least five sources
of references. You may use the course textbooks, other textbooks on
criminal justice, and academic websites. Additional resources may be
used such as the educational and government websites (generally denoted by a gov.
or edu. address suffix), but the focus of your research should be
on scholarly journal articles which can be found through the
library’s research page. Again, please consult with me if in doubt
about your sources.
II.
Format
You must cite
all of the sources that you use when writing the paper. A
citation is necessary for any information that you paraphrase or directly
quote. If you do not have direct personal knowledge of the
information that you use in the paper, then a citation is required.
Be sure to cite your sources in the body of the paper and list them on your
reference page. Students must use APA formats for citations and
reference page.
III. The Purpose of your Research Paper
The
purpose of the research paper is to fully describe and analyze a specific issue
in Human Resource and Management in Law Enforcement and Corrections not only
from the present but historically as well, (select one of any issue covered
during our class this semester: For example, the process or procedure necessary
to hire or suspend/terminate a police officer or correctional officer or a
diverse issue, etc.). You must then explore each of the typographies of human
resource management for law enforcement officers and correctional officers that
we covered (Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security; History of
Employment Law; Equal Employment Opportunity; Case Studies; LGBT-Diversity;
Union and Collective Bargaining; and The Need for Ethics) from your
perspective. In other words, you need to explain and describe how you
would resolve the issue from the seven categories mentioned below? Finally, you
will describe the prevention strategies that your conclusion would suggest
we employ to reduce or eliminate future issues relative to your case (Video: of
you explain how to resolve the issue).
IV. The Five Steps to your Research Paper
Your
paper will be broken down into five distinct categories and should be titled
as such with topic headings for each section:
1. Introduction – Briefly present your chosen issue from
our discussion in class or assignment and what you hope to accomplish with
this paper. (A good way to start is: “The purpose of this
paper is…..)
2. Theory/Historical approach – Fully describe how past case(s)has
impacted your issues. Who are the major stakeholders involved?
How do their explanations of issue(s) differ? What are the basic
principles that should apply to the issue at hand? How are they
different from other decisions of cases? How long your cases have
been in an existence? Do you think it works well to
explain your particular issue? What are its weak and strong points?
etc….. What are some examples of specific issues within your cases?
3. Application-The third section of the research paper is
the direct application of your cases or law to the actual crime. Be
sure to use examples from each the seven typographies of human resource
management for law enforcement and corrections that we’ve studied. The
point here is to explain how your particular section of law or cases
explain a variety of different issues confronting human resource and
management for law enforcement and corrections. Can it explain or resolve
all issues relative to the case in cheif or is it limited to just one
typography of human resource management for law enforcement and corrections?
4. Prevention – How does your approach suggest that we
prevent crime? What should we do with known criminals?
Basically, describe how your theory would put an end to crime if its
theorists were put in charge of the criminal justice system.
5. Conclusion – Summarize the key concepts you
presented in the paper. Sum it up; restate the most important ideas
you presented in your paper.
