I
need a paper that focuses on the impact of Spanish settler colonialism
in the Americas in the 16th century initiated a cultural, soical and econmoic exchange that had (positive and negative) repercussions on both sides, Native Americans and Europeans. The introduction of deadly diseases like the smallpox, that brought Indians close to extinction should be only shortly mentioned. The focus should rather lie on the exchange of crops/plants and what impact that had on the diet/foodways of the Native Americans and Mediterreneans (e.g. introduction of horses -> horses used by Indigenous to hunt more bisons; New World crops calorically denser (like potatoes) -> increase in population in Europe…)
The introduction of the paper should outline the topic of the paper, summarize main aspects of existing literature on the topic/scholars opinions, and outline what the research questions & methods of the paper will be. I have included the exposé of my paper which should be used as a model for the introduction (respective changes have to be made though; like including Alfred Crosby and the Colombian exchange into it…)
The paper should include the following aspects:
-what did the flora and fauna look like when Columbus & co arrived, what were the foodways of the Natives, what did they eat? (mentioning regional differences) ; would be nice to have some quotes from Columbus diaries or Hernandez diaries regarding the fruits/plants,… they found there
– How did their diet change once the conquistadors came? Why did it change? – food, crops, animals brought from a)Europe and b) other parts of the Americas; why did the Spanish bring Old world food to the New World? – especially important here Rebecca Eearle´s book/ article; afraid that eating Indigenous food would turn their bodies into Native Americans
What were the results of introducing Old World food to the New World?
a) demographic effects the crop/plants brought from Spain was not
growing well in all regions because of the cllimate but in those where
it grew, they were exterminating often the Old plants/crops as they had
no natural enemy… Animal stock was brought and could reproduce easily
as they had no natural enemy, either. Eating, for example, the
indigenous plants,…
b) effects on the indigenous population/ health: Sugar cane was
introduces -> diabetes amongst indigenous;
wine -> alcohol caused health problems
different starches (e.g. wheat instead of maize for tortiallas)
– Introduction of New World Food to the Old World. -> increase in population in Europe
– Introduction of Corn to Europe – because the Conquistadors only brought the food but not the tradition of how they are prepared into the Old World, Italians at the beginning suffered from malnutrition when they substituted wheat with maize because they did not know how to prepare it properly so that the nutrients are activated…
– New World Food used for Trade
– Long-term effect on the American cuisine?
Which effects did the Spanish Colonialism have on the cuisines of the
Americas as we know it today? E.g. in Mexico use of wheat and corn for
tortillas; influences in north american cuisine.
