Your proposal will be between 2-3 pages in length (not including title page or references list), and will
map out what you plan to do in your term paper. It must be formatted in 12-point Times New Roman,
double-spaced, with 1” margins, and cited in APA or MLA style.
There are two goals for this assignment. First, it gives you some motivation to start thinking through
your term paper. Second, it gives me an opportunity to give you some early feedback on what you plan
to do for your final assignment.
What you need to do in your proposal:
1. Include a preliminary thesis statement or research question. Briefly, what kind of claims about
the subject would you like to explore? What is the problem or issue that fascinates you? What
kinds of arguments will you expect to make? I realize that this will change as you undertake your
research, but give me a general idea of which issues are at stake here.
2. Describe your object of study. What will you be examining? A television programme? A blog?
An audience practice? Introduce and provide a brief overview of the popular culture
phenomenon that you will use.
3. Identify and briefly describe 1-3 theoretical concepts that you think will be useful in examining
your object of study. Why do you think they are relevant here? You are welcome to use concepts
from our course readings for this, and/or supplement them with other concepts you have come
across in other courses.
4. Tell me how you will incorporate audiences in your paper. For example: will you look at specific
behaviours? How audiences are addressed? How you think audiences are reacting?
5. Include a list of 10 potential references (both academic and non-academic primary sources of
data), which incorporates at least 4 of the course readings.
