Identify and explain hapa consciousness and naturalized hypodescent early in the essay, perhaps in the introduction. Remember that naturalized hypodescent is a phenomenon in which a mixed-race child or person is racialized as the subordinate race in the social hierarchy (the nonwhite heritage). So, how do the children’s experience with being identified as Chinese/Asian rather than as mixed-race impact their relationships with their family/community and how they see themselves?
In the past, many students have written more about James’ experience as a Chinese American. Remember that James is monoracial, not a hapa person! While the parents play a major role in the children’s lives, center the children in the essay.
To keep the analysis fully developed, write about a single child: Lydia, Nath, or Hannah.
Use the quotation sandwich model for body paragraphs. Strong essays will consider and analyze the use of literary devices–I mention several in the video lectures.
