Background: When questioned by one of Hrothgar’s men, Beowulf begins to boast of his
accomplishments.
Assignment: You will now write your own Boast, using Beowulf’s speech as a model. Remember,
the boasting of Anglo-Saxon warriors was not considered conceit but was instead a method of
inspiring heroic deeds.
Requirements:
– Your boast should appear similar to Beowulf’s and must be a minimum of 20 numbered
lines. Lines do not have a particular syllable or word requirement, but each line must add
substantial development to your unfolding boast. No weak fillers allowed.
– Like Beowulf’s boast, your boast must include:
o Address the host, in this case your teacher and classmates.
o Include a statement of who you are, your family ties, and your relatives living and dead
who add credence to your name.
o Identify and explain what you intend to do in the future.
o
o Identify and explain your previous accomplishments.
o Explain how you intend to accomplish your goals.
o Come to a satisfying conclusion. What happens if you obtain your goal? If you
don’t?
o Include description and figurative language including but not limited to
– FOUR original kennings.
– at least FOUR lines of heavy alliteration.
– caesura in at least four lines.
– You must label each of the above elements in your boast.
o The topic of your boast is up to you.
o Boasts may be serious, satirical, ironic, and/or humorous; however, boasts must be
appropriate for the classroom.
o You may use “artistic license” to add interest to your boast; however, the challenge you
face must be rooted in reality.

prepare you for this challenge: I’m a very hardworking, smart, honest, caring, resposible, and trustworthy person
o Identify and explain your previous accomplishments: I been a basketball managers since freshman year so for 4 years now, I have 2 jobs and I have always been a honor roll student since middle school and always help high standards whenit comes to school and grades. I have multipe awards for my grades such as: Principles regocnition, honor roll list, and always been in the top of my class.
o Explain how you intend to accomplish your goals: After highschool, I plan to attend a community college for two years after that I plan on transfering to VCU to obtain my nursing degree
o Come to a satisfying conclusion. What happens if you obtain your goal? If you
don’t? If I obtain my goal I would be reaching my dream goal of being a nurse practitioner and working in the hospital doing what I love which is helping people and making people happy. But, if I don’t reach my goal I would be very disapointed with myself becuase I will be letting both myself and my parents down. Becuase my parents worked so hard for me to alway reach my goals in my life.
