Identify and think about the myriad ways in which law affects your life
on a daily basis. Five (5) times over the course of the semester each
student will write a journal entry describing at least one way in which
law has affected their life, or about a legal question they sought to
answer. There will be five journal entries in total, and each entry
should be at least two full paragraphs in length (that is a guide as to
how much depth you need to provide).
The completed journal may be turned in
whenever you have completed all required entries, but no later than the
due date listed in the syllabus (i.e., you can do one every other week
over the course of the whole semester, or every week for the first five
weeks, etc.). Do not submit
journal entries every week. Just create one big document that contains
all of the weekly entries and save it as you update it (and make sure to
back it up!).
For this assignment, discuss personal
events in the journal only to the extent you are comfortable disclosing
private, confidential legal information (i.e., completing this journal
may waive attorney client confidentiality or fifth amendment privilege
if you discuss an active or potential legal matter). In other words, I
am not looking for confessions of crimes. I am interested only in
hearing about how you thought law affected you. For example, “I stopped
at a stop sign on my way to work today. Stop signs are a good example of
how our legal system works because…” Or, “It took forever for my street
to get plowed. That made me wonder about snow plow decision-making. How
does the Municipality of Anchorage decide which roads get plowed first?
So I looked up the municipal ordinance and this is what I found. . .
Then I looked into who has the contract to plow the roads—does the
Municipality of Anchorage own the plows or do they contract with a
private company? I did some very basic general research (i.e., I Googled
it) and this is what I found. . .”
