The American Psychological Association defines psychology as the study of behavior and mental processes. In other words, it is the study of why we are like the way we are. It encompasses what people do, their thoughts, emotions, perceptions, reasoning processes, memories, and even biological activities that maintain bodily functioning (Feldman, 2021).
This writing assignment gives you the opportunity to review concepts learned so far from our textbook or discussions in class and apply them to your real-life experiences.
Instructions (you will do this four times):
1. Summarize a memory of a specific event from your childhood.
2. Under your summary:
• Identify it either having a positive or negative effect on your life and why.
• Then choose one concept from Chapter 1, 2, 3, or 6 that most correlates to a behavior or attitude you currently possess because of that memory.
For example: Neuroscientists discovered the existence of mirror neurons (concept), neurons that fire not only when a person enacts a particular behavior but also when a person simply observes another individual carrying out the same behavior. Some psychologists believe mirror neurons can help people develop a greater empathy for people, such as those who experienced or witnessed a similar event.
The below is the rubric that explains my grading parameters. Keep in mind, this is NOT an English paper so punctuation and spelling are not my biggest concern – however, do your best. What matters is that you clearly explain your memory, analyze it based on how it positively or negatively effects your current behavior and attitudes, and the concept you’ve learned that correlates to what you experienced.
I reduced the number of memories you need to recall down to four since I suddenly realized you are much younger than I so your experiences may be more limited. The following is how I will be scoring your papers for each memory: (See the first scoring example below)
