Community Health Forum: Obesity
Context
In the last three decades, obesity has become a major public health issue in the United States. More than two-thirds of U.S. adults were considered overweight or obese in the 2009–2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Obesity leads to many health complications, including heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes. In this unit, the community health forum will give you a more thorough understanding of the behaviors that lead to obesity and the public health considerations associated with them.
Discussion Prompt
For this discussion use the scenario presented in the Linking Theory to Practice: Obesity media piece to help inform your post.
In your initial post, address the following questions:
Is obesity an issue in a community you identify with? If so, how would you apply a theory-based approach to a community as a whole, and to the individuals and interpersonal units within it?
What interventions for each stage of the Transtheoretical Model would you consider for an obesity prevention effort? How would they differ at each stage?
How has obesity impacted community and health resources and organizations in your community?
What intervention(s) would you propose to help resources and organizations better cope with the demands of obesity related health issues?
