REQUIRED LITERATURE: The Dew Breaker by Edwidge Danticat and Heaven Is All Goodbyes by Tongo-Eisen-Martin
THIS IS A TWO-PART ASSIGNMENT:
1. PAPER (DUE 12/10/21)
2. POWERPOINT PRESENTATION (DUE 12/5/21)
PAPER OVERVIEW:
The purpose of this
paper is to get you thinking about literature as a mode of engaging with
concrete social problems. To that end, your essay should address the ways these
literary texts approach identity and oppression. Can literature’s ability to
represent different perspectives act as a force against structural racism,
sexism, and colonialism? What can these texts teach us about the nature of
inequality––and how to build a better world? For this paper, you
will build upon your close reading skills to interpret more than one piece of
literature, focusing on the differences and similarities between them.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
4-6 pages
of analytical writing in 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. Use MLA or
Chicago style citations. ESSAYS MUST HAVE a creative title, be double-spaced,
and have your last name and page number in the right header on every page. I
expect your papers to have a thesis (main argument) that engages deeply with two
literary texts. Although you are not required to use outside sources, your
papers should use evidence from the texts to substantiate your arguments.
While you are not expected to bring background
reading into your essay, you are required to quote from the text you’re
discussing.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POWERPOINT PRESENTATION:
Presentations will be roughly 5-8 minutes long and should be related to some aspect of your paper. A good presentation will include a slide show with texual evidence and a visual or multimedia component, as well a strong argument about literature’s relationship to identity.
