1. If you were a school nurse planning a prevention education program for your rural middle school students on alcohol, drugs, and sex, what would you need to consider before actually beginning your program in a Judeo Christian, Muslim, or Buddhist educational system? What methods would you incorporate in your teaching to meet the physical, spiritual and mental needs of the three groups? What ethical considerations should be incorporated into program planning? What message do you think adolescents need to hear?
2. Should Abstinence based education be required for all adolescents in public and private schools regardless of religious or nonreligious belief. Should the federal government be required to fund abstinence based education in addition to contraceptive methods.
3. A 12-year-old adolescent named Kelly has come to a clinic where you work as a nurse. She has stated that she is at least 12 weeks pregnant but has not told anyone. She is scared of telling her boyfriend for fear of losing him. She wants an abortion, has cash, and does not want anyone to know about the pregnancy or the abortion. This abortion is currently illegal in her states based on legislative changes. What are the ethical issues surrounding this situation. Consider the trust–confidentiality–privacy dilemma as well as the consent dilemma. Is it appropriate to discuss an adoption plan? What are the rights of her 14 year old boyfriend Ted? Will Ted or his parents be required to provide financial support to the child if the child is born?
