Imagine that Confucius and Laozi are pen pals or Facebook friends. Imagine that they know everything about Confucianism and Daoism that you NOW know. In other words, they are not limited to the knowledge that they would have had during their respective historical times.
Choose one of them to write a letter to the other (i.e., Confucius writes to Laozi or Laozi writes to Confucius). Write a letter as one of them. Focus the letter on the differences and similarities between Confucianism and Daoism. Demonstrate that you have learned the main beliefs and practices of each tradition and show me how you think these representatives of the two traditions (Confucius represents Confucianism and Laozi represents Daoism) would interact and understand each other. What would they say to each other? How would they say it? Why would they say it?
For example, your letter may read, “Dear Laozi, I am writing to you to discuss the possibility of combining our religious traditions to create a super religion that would….” Or, “Dear Confucius, I agree with the way that you understand…, but I think that you have misrepresented….”
Please remember that you are composing a letter. That means that your response to this assignment should be in the form of a letter (Dear X, ….. Sincerely, XX ). But this does not mean that you should depart from the persuasive writing style that I have been encouraging you to use this semester. Your letter should be persuasive. It should present arguments or points of view that are supported with detailed examples. Your arguments should be organized into separate paragraphs that roughly follow the OREO approach.
