Importantance of lighting in interior design

Dear Anwar Taha,

The right lighting is important. Lighting sets the mood and contrasts the decorations in the room. It might be the most important element in a room.

The lighting in a home changes the mood of a room just as it does the perceived size of a room. Placement and type are important aspects of interior design, and they work in conjunction with color selections, room size, availability of natural light and furniture selection. The elements that come together when the right lighting is achieved transform a room into a seamless combination of functionality and style.

In this weeks optional course, we will be enlightened about indoor design lighting. We will understand the importance of the right tones and colors, as well as location of the lights.

Good lighting improves a room and makes it easier to work in.
While appropriate lighting is important in any space, a dressing room in particular requires careful lighting to provide the illumination necessary for the detailed activities that take place in the space. Applying cosmetics, hygienic routines and selecting jewelry all call for specific lighting. By taking into account the type of things you will use your room for, you can create a space that is well lit, making it both more useful and more attractive.

General Light
Every room needs general lighting if it is to be used effectively for daily tasks. The easiest way to do this is with a large overhead light in the center of the space or, more to the point, in the middle of the traffic area. This means that if you have shelves on the walls of the room, center the light between the shelves rather than the walls. The type of bulb in the light fixture should be one that casts a glow that is similar to natural daylight. Avoid fluorescent bulbs and look for incandescent or light-emitting diodes with a daylight tint. Use a light that is high enough that you wont run into it, but dont be afraid to use chandeliers or pendant lights in the room for drama.

Toiletries
Not all dressing rooms include an area for cosmetic and hygienic routines, but if your dressing room does include a toiletries area, it is essential to get the light right. Lighting for cosmetic application must be precise to allow for accuracy. Lights that are too bright will wash out makeup, which can lead to overapplication. Too dim and you wont be able to see what you are doing. Use a 60-watt or equivalent bulb in each fixture and no more than four fixtures. Look for fixtures that have frosted shades to help prevent harsh shadows.

Mirror Lighting
The position of lights used around mirrors is particularly important in a dressing room. Avoid lights that are too high or too low and take into account what height you will be at, whether seated or standing, when working in the space. Light that is just above eye level works well for preventing shadows. Always use more than one source of illumination. A pair of lights on each side of a mirror is common, but a trio of lights also works well. Bar lights, which provide a long bar of illumination, work particularly well because they cast a large, even light.

Other Lighting
Task lighting is used when performing an activity. In a dressing room, that includes things like picking out jewelry or shoes. Consider putting lights in shelves or drawers to help illuminate this process. Under-cabinet lighting is useful for areas with counter space under cabinets that is used for storage. If you have a desk or dresser in the space, a pair of lamps or single lamp not only provides additional light but adds visual interest as well.
