Your essay should clearly introduce the theme you are examining and demonstrate that you have read
and understood the work of at least 6 geographers or other social scientists on the topic, as well as how
they relate to or challenge each other. In addition, a strong essay will present your own informed
argument about the value of different approaches to the topic and will be structured clearly and develop
logically from one paragraph to the next.
Essays must be submitted on VULA. All essays should be referenced in accordance with the Harvard style.
Please include your essay title, Essay number, and your name, and format the document. Please note that
the appropriate literature for academic assignments tends to come from peer-reviewed academic journals
and academic books. It is inadvisable to use Wikipedia or to rely on Google to search for relevant readings
(Google Scholar is acceptable). If using online references, please familiarise yourself with the correct
referencing techniques for website and other copyrighted material such as pictures, cartoons, etc. If you
use Google Books, the referencing is the same as for the printed book (i.e. no URL is needed but the full
publication details of the book are required). If you are in any doubt about how to reference a source
correctly, please consult a style manual. If doubt persists, ask
