The United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 with a target to achieve the SDGs by 2030. The SDGs contain 17 goals covering a broad range of sustainable development issues for the world, such as ending poverty, hunger, improving health and education, combating climate change, etc. Health has a central place in SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages, and clearly, nursing has a significant role to play concerning SDG 3. But the work of nurses also has a considerable impact on the delivery of other SDGs such as education and poverty – these are often referred to as the social determinants of health (SDoH). So, while nurses seek to help people achieve optimal health, our work frequently includes addressing the SDoH, and nurses understand the links between broader conditions and individual and population health.
