Start with “Dear Future [Your Name]”, and write whatever comes. The letter should be honest and in a tone that is authentic to you, so do not shy away from colloquialisms, slang, or even swears if you need to use them.
Denials that you have biases**, are color-blind (“I don’t see color”), and exclamations of being “fine” are answers I will not accept. It is important that you show willingness to dig deep and entertain “what if” scenarios. Everyone has biases. What separates good counselors from bad ones is willingness to examine and address them.
Consider this assignment contract with yourself and with me to continue to grow even if that growth is uncomfortable. The letter will not be shared with your colleagues.
If at any time during the semester, you feel like you are struggling, please read the letter. If I suspect you are having a hard time, I may also encourage you to read the letter.
This does not need to be in APA format as long as it is legible and in 12 point font. There is no page limit, but I expect that you will not be able to do a thorough job in less than 2 full pages.
** Remember that biases aren’t always prejudices against a certain situation or population. Sometimes they are ways in which we may be overly *for* them. In what ways do your past experiences have the potential to sway your objective judgment?
