Individualized Marriage

Individualized Marriage
Introduction:
Some argue that the individualized marriage has steadily eroded marriage as an institution designed to meet the needs of society. With individualized marriage, personal happiness takes a primary role. This sometimes results in divorce or even the choice not to marry in the first place.
Instructions:
For this activity, use your sociological thinking to examine the generational changes to the institution of marriage. Report on the marital beliefs (why they got married, and expectations of marriage), of an older married couple (ages 60 and up), and a middle-aged married couple (ages 40-60), Then report on the marital beliefs (do they plan on getting married, if so, what are their expectations, if not why?) of a young non married couple (ages 35 and below).
Use one to two major concepts and appropriate terminology from the text to explain what has changed in the purpose of relationships and marriage from one generation to the next.
Be sure to explain how each concept and terminology apply to the ideals of traditional marriage versus modern marriage in the United States. Then evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of marriage in each generation from a societal standpoint.
