Infographic Project

This project requires a combination of critical thought and visual creativity. You will design and create an infographic that effectively communicates your topic of choice. What is an infographic?
An infographic is a claim expressed through a visual metaphor, conveying the fresh understanding of relationships, expressed through a judicious selection and arrangement of visuals, evidence, and text acquired during inquiry research within a discipline (Abilock & Williams 2014) (Source

Furthermore, an infographic condenses challenging issues, like racism, into consumable forms of information. The visual element presented in infographics can foster understanding and improve the retention of information. This project assignment specifically captures the following learning goals and outcomes:
Enhance our visual literacy skills
Create our own knowledge and content
Simplify complex issues
Elicit emotional connections for the intended audience
Represent data and statistics in a straightforward format
Raise awareness and inform people about an important topic
Example
Take a look at the following example (infographic presented on the right side): “ERASE Racism is a regional organization that leads public policy advocacy campaigns and related initiatives to promote racial equity in areas such as housing, public school education, and community development. We engage in a variety of research, education and consulting activities to address institutional and structural racism. Long Island, New York was the site of ERASE Racism’s initial work and continues to be its geographic home and key focus area. At present, ERASE Racism’s work is expanding to encompass statewide and tri-state regional activities with related national work as needed” (source

Design and create an infographic that presents a serious topic centered on how race and racism operate today. Choose a topic from Chapters 8-13 in the textbook Race and Racisms (Golash-Boza, 2021) and make an infographic about the racial issue you selected. Review the chapters listed below:
Chapter 8: Educational Inequality
Chapter 9: Income and Labor Market Inequality
Chapter 10: Inequality in Housing and Wealth
Chapter 11: Racism and the Criminal Justice System
Chapter 12: Health Inequalities, Environmental Racism, and Environmental Justice
Chapter 13: Racism, Nativism, and Immigration Policy
The broad goal should be to make an infographic the provides useful information to someone who may know little about your topic. Create an infographic about why the significance of your issue by providing statistics from academic sources. Provide citations to relevant facts, figures, charts, diagrams, and stats. You will include a minimum of five academic sources.
Consider the following steps to create an infographic:
1. Define your topic by selecting the important information
What is your key message? (choose 2-3 main ideas)
What “story” are you telling? (use visuals to guide the reader/viewer)
Who is your intended audience?
What research will you need to present accurate and relevant information?
2. Organize the information in a rough draft and think about how to include images and visuals
Graphs, clipart, pictures, and other images/visuals
3. Create an infographic using the free design site/platform of your choice:
