Informational essay

The first essay is an informational essay that looks at an issue of your choosing. The issue must be current and controversial (we will have an in-depth discussion of viable topics, and I will clear each topic) and have two legitimate, opposing points of view. In this essay, you will review the three-four points that are in contention and their basic arguments. (minimum 1000 words and three academic* sources)

An “Informational Essay” intends, as its name implies, to inform the reader on a topic. As such, it should be as bias-free as one can make it. While it is impossible to excise all bias, we do our best.

It is important to note, this ban on biases refers to our own bias—the biases of proponents of either side of the issue may be included. When it comes time for your argument, these biases will have to be reckoned with by additional research into sources provided by neutral parties.

To write this essay, you will need to do some research, which should be done on the library webpage or in the actual, physical library because, well, google is crap for research. You will need three sources with “evidence”, which is NOT the same as “support”.

“Evidence” is factual, truthful information that comes from, and is supported by, research, which must meet certain objective standards. It can be used to “support” your arguments.

“Support” is, essentially, anything that shows or suggests something is correct—so it can include evidence—but it can also be other people’s unproven opinion. Newspapers, magazines, blogs (especially blogs), facebook posts (especially especially facebook posts), and tweets (especially, especially especially tweets) traffic mostly in support, which is why they don’t count towards your sources total. You can include them certainly, but you cannot rest your argument upon them.

Back to essay one:

You will present both sides to the topic, but you do not have to make any arguments. Your job here is NOT to prove a point, but merely to summarize or paraphrase the arguments the two sides are making.
