The purpose of this assignment is to encourage students to begin thinking early about the social problem they will focus on for the History, Policies, and Advocacy paper. You will identify a social problem affecting vulnerable, oppressed, underserved, or impoverished populations for which you have some deep concern and will conduct an initial internet search to discover what is known about the history of the social problem as well as currently (who is affected by it?, how are they affected?, what is being done?). This is the one time when students are encouraged to use Wikipedia! Students are encouraged to see what is actually being said on the internet and to visit at least four websites. Be sure to keep track of which websites you visit, as you will be required to submit a references list in APA format. Each student will turn in a one to two-page paper that clearly identifies the social problem that will be the focus of the History, Policies, and Advocacy paper and addresses the following questions in paragraph format based on what you gleaned from the websites you visited:
What do you think about the social problem?
What is being said about the social problem? This can be in terms of the causes, who is affected, the consequences, what is being done about it.
What puzzles you about the social problem?
What do you want to explore about the social problem?
The paper must be double-spaced with one-inch margins and in APA 7th edition style. This paper does not require an abstract. All papers must have an APA formatted references page that identifies the websites that were visited. All papers will be submitted in Canvas and must be saved as a Word document (.doc or .docx) or submitted as a Google doc.
