TOPICS:
1. Initiation stories often concern a choice to abandon or join a family, group, or com-
munity. Write an essay in which you examine the choices made by one or more of
the main characters in these stories. How do such choices shape the plot of each
story or the changes characters go through?
2. A child, teenager, or adult will have different perspectives on the same situations,
and initiation stories often dramatically reveal such differences in the way charac-
ters and narrators respond. Write an essay on the way the narrator’s age affects your
understanding of the “initiation” in one of the stories in this album.
Instructions:
Write a 3 to 5 page paper in response to one of the first four writing prompts from the “Initiation Stories” packet (see “Suggestions for Writing”, pg. 30, #s 1-4).
Reference (using direct quotes or paraphrases) the story or stories in each body paragraph.
No outside sources are allowed. Do not use Google or any homework helper websites to help you write the paper. That is plagiarism, and you will get a zero for the assignment. More than one act of plagiarism will result in an “F” for the semester, and a formal complaint will be made to the Dean of Students.
Follow MLA guidelines for formatting and citation: typed, double-spaced, 12 pt. font, standard margins.
Basic paper outline:
Introduction: 1 paragraph long; includes the topic statement / thesis / main idea
Body paragraphs:
each paragraph should refer back to the topic statement / thesis / main idea
each paragraph should be about 1 thing / idea
each paragraph should include a claim and support for the claim
claim: your own original idea in your own words
support: an argument / expansion of the claim
