Current technologies that are being currently implemented in healthcare are artificial intelligence, telemedicine/telehealth and wearable technology. The use of Artificial intelligence in healthcare is very beneficial as it analyzes data, uncover patterns that humans can not, and use algorithms to help with better business and clinical decisions (International Business Machine, n.d.). Telehealth is also a benefit, it was a way for providers to speak directly with patients and assist with needs from the home during the COVID 19 pandemic (International Business Machine, n.d.). It is still beneficial today as it relieves the patient from missing appointments due to work or the hospital being too far. Wearable technology is beneficial for both patients and providers as well. There are many options to choose from for the patients comfortability, it tracks items such as heart rate, blood pressure, and exercise. According to an article done by Forbes, wearable technology also provides clinicians with the ability to monitor and track patient health (Reiss, 2022).

aThere are many technologies that continue to be implemented in health care. One that has been around for decades but continues to see an extension in use is the cell phone. The cell phone has gone from being used only to make calls, to now being an instrumental piece of medical equipment that has multiple benefits.

Physicians, nurses, technologist, administrators, and numerous other roles within the hospital rely on their cell phone. Due to their being countless advantages of a cellular phone, I will discuss three that I am particularly familiar with. One of the main benefits of the cell phone is that it has provided is the improvement of health care provider communication. I am referring to much more than voice/audio calls. Health care providers can send pertinent information about patients to one another through a variety of applications. One of these programs that is in use at my health care organization is called TigerConnect.

This program allows those within organizations to send and receive messages comprising of sensitive data via a safe and virtual private network (TigerConnect, 2019). These messages may contain lab results, exams, as well as multimedia posts that aid in efficient care. Employees no longer must rely on computer systems to send or receive this data which allows for quicker communication whether they are in or out of the facility. This faster spread of info can be live saving when every second matters regarding a patient’s care. TigerConnect follows HIPAA guidelines so that any data sent is encrypted and protected.

A second benefit of cell phones in health care is that they are aiding with medical diagnoses. Mobile phone applications can detect heart arrhythmias which helps for both screening and identification. Physicians can then identify (with the help of this software) whether a patient has a multitude of rhythmic disorders such as atrial fibrillation. “These apps involve either the use of (1) photoplethysmographic recording or (2) a handheld external electrocardiographic recording device attached to the mobile phone or wristband (Li, White, Tipoe, Liu, Wong, Jesuthasan, Baranchuk, Tse, & Yan, 2019).

A third (but not last) benefit of cell phones is easier use of patient portals. A patient portal is a website in which patients have 24-hour access to their personal health information (PHI). This website is on a secured network which requires the use of a username and password. Of course, a computer can be used to access this information, but the cell phone makes it easy for patients to view their records virtually anywhere and anytime. Some of the information able viewable on the portal includes:

Recent doctor visits
Discharge summaries
Medications
Immunizations
Allergies
Lab results
Securely message your doctor
Request prescription refills
Schedule non-urgent appointments
Check benefits and coverage
Update contact information
Make payments
Download and complete forms
View educational materials (The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, 2017)
This allows patients to be more in control of their PHI. Being able to review this data on a cellular phone really gives patients in advantage in being able to manage their own care. As more applications are developed, the cell phone should continue to be a vital tool for both health care organizations and patients.
