Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)

Purpose
Students are encouraged to go beyond class notes, textbooks and even clinical rounds to better understand select diseases, including their etiology, diagnostic testing, treatment courses and prognosis. The Case Studies will help the student learn how to develop Plans of Care for the patient. Finally, students will be given the opportunity to practice speaking to medical colleagues, including Physicians & other Allied Health professionals.
Why? Today’s Respiratory Therapist has evolved from a knob-turning technician into a highly educated professional and decision maker. Furthermore, education has strengthened to an A.S. degree or to the elite B.S. degree level in many cases. A tremendous amount of technical, decisional and communicative information is now necessary for this valued professional to know in order to perform their job effectively in an increasingly complex medical industry.
General Requirements
1)Proper grammar and vocabulary is expected from a college student.
a. A medical dictionary is highly recommended.
b. Spellcheck should be utilized, remembering that it typically does not know how to spell many medical words!
c. Sentences should begin with Capital letters and end with periods. Period.
2)a. General APA Guidelines, 7th Edition
Your paper should be typed, double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5″ x 11″) with 1″ margins on all sides. APA recommends using 12 pt. Times New Roman font.
Include a page header at the top of every page. To create a page header, insert page numbers flush right. Then type “TITLE OF YOUR PAPER” in the header flush left.
b. Major Paper Sections
Your paper should include four major sections: the Title Page, Abstract, Main Body, and Reference Page.

3)In-Text Citation Basics:
a. Give credit to authors for their work. The student will earn a grade of “0” for plagiarism.
When using APA format, follow the author-date method of in-text citation. This means that the author’s last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text, for example, (Jones, 1998), and a complete reference should appear in the reference list at the end of the paper.

1) Go to Format and Paragraph and set the spacing to 1 ½ of spacing between lines.
a. This allows the Instructor to write in corrective comments for the student.
2) Folder
a. Use a folder that allows the Instructor to easily access each page for comments.
3) A minimum of three scientifically-based references are required on the Reference Page.
a. Wikipedia is not an acceptable scientific reference.
b. At least one book or periodical should be included on your Reference Page.
Grading Process
1) The paper(s) will typically account for 15% – 20% of the student’s grade.
a. See Syllabus or Instructor each Semester for details
2) The instructor will grade the paper using Rubric-based categories (will vary with each paper).

b. Content
i. Was the information medical and evidence-based?
c. Grammar & Vocabulary
i. Was grammar and vocabulary correct?
d. Data
i. Was pertinent Diagnostic and Clinical data described or included?
e. Footnotes & References
i. Was information referenced by to a footnote or Reference?
f. S.O.A.P. (for Case Study)
i. Was the S.O.A.P. format utilized properly?
g. Presentation (for Oral presentation only)
i. Did presenter enunciate, speak well to audience and answer questions appropriately?
h. Visual aids (extra; not included in the 4-6 page length of paper)
i. Did student utilize any photos, charts or diagrams to educate reader?
Pathophysiology paper Requirements
1) This research paper is expected to be written at a professional level.
2) This paper should be an in-depth investigation of your selected pulmonary disease.
3) This paper should be between 4-6 pages in length (excluding the title and reference pages).
4) The Patho Report shall contain the following generalheadings:
a. Definition of the disease
b. Epidemiology of the disease (who, what, when & where)
c. Pathophysiology of the disease
d. Diagnostic tests for the disease
e. Treatments for the disease
f. Prognosis of the disease
g. References
