Essay question: How does Fanon define colonialism?
Frantz Fanon was activist- and political-scholar, formerly trained as a psychiatrist. He was born on the island of Fort de-France, Martinique (a former French colony) and went to France for higher education. He primary focused on the effects of mental-colonialism, or rather the “colonization of the mind”. How does someone become mentally-enslaved? In his famous 1952 work, Black Skin, White Masks, his primary argument is that Black folk (men in particular) want to be white due to racism, coercion, colonialism, and mental-conditioning of inferiority placed on colonized peoples (indiginous Black and Brown people throughout the world) for the purpose of oppression and suppression and European/Western global dominiation. Fanon’s primary argument of fighting for liberation is for the purpose physical and mental freedom. Keep this in mind when you are reading Fanon’s work.
