Based on your initial understanding of the show you’ve been assigned, take 20-30 minutes to freewrite or brainstorm ideas. A minimum of 3 pages of work must be included in your submission.
For a successful grade, focus on the following:
· Thoroughness, really think through the whole script, each character, each important theme or motif
· Make connections between theme and plot, focus on details as well as the whole picture
· The focus here is not on solving the design problems, but identifying what the design problems might be
· Think about answering the “WHAT” and “WHY” of the script more than the “HOW”
This could include any or all of the following:
· Clustering, Idea or mind mapping, webbing
· Brainstorm lists
o Order events, connect characters, work through possible themes
o Look for any symbolism in the play—what ideas, objects, or words might have multiple meanings
o Consider the meanings of events from different characters’ perspectives
o Are there multiple themes? Discuss them in order of strength or importance
· Free writing related to the play and/or design ideas
o Write about the play as an objective viewer, one of the characters, consider the author’s intention and reason for writing the play
o Consider each part of the story and how it relates to the whole story or an important theme you’ve identified
o What are potential themes the play is targeting? Write about how they are shown in the script. How could that be accomplished through design?
o How might the play or a production seek to interact with each of the 5 senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell
· Image/color collages
· Thumbnail sketched ideas of design elements or impressions from the script
· Very rough model pieces made of cardstock or other inexpensive, easy to form products
· Sound or music experiments relevant to your understanding of the script and your design
If your creative process takes you in a different direction, please consult your instructor before proceeding. While this assignment is intentionally without structure, there is a purpose here that must be accomplished.
