Write a 4-page paper answering the following question. Your response should make careful use of the relevant readings and provide an opening thesis statement indicating your main argument.
Papers should be typed, double-spaced, with 12-point font and 1” margins. All sources must be cited (parenthetical citations and footnotes are both acceptable options — and use whatever citation format you prefer — but please include page numbers in your citations). Grades will reflect the quality of your analysis, effective use of sources, and overall presentation and organization. Papers are due by the end of the day on Monday, August 2.
Topic:
Compare Neustadt and Schlesinger’s perspectives on the modern presidency. Is it possible to usefully combine Neustadt’s emphasis on the ongoing constraints on presidential power (and the resulting reliance on persuasion) with Schlesinger’s theory of the very powerful imperial presidency? If you do not think these two views can fit together, does one perspective give you convincing insights with which to challenge the other view?
In exploring this topic, be sure to indicate the main insights each author provides regarding the modern presidency. Please also draw on Grover’s discussion of both Neustadt and Schlesinger, along with the pieces by Neustadt and Schlesinger.
