Is pet ownership beneficial to people’s health? If yes, why?
How are residents’ personal characteristics related to fear of crime in their neighbourhoods?
Search the PsycINFO database for abstracts of books, book chapters, and journal articles that meet the following criteria:
direct focus on the broad research question, and
published within the last 10 years and in English.
Review these abstracts carefully. Note what research has been done that addresses this broad research question, and what has not been done.
Based on your review of these abstracts, write a narrower research question, or develop a specific hypothesis that can be tested.
Report Requirements
You are to submit your report to your tutor using the assignment dropbox. Your completed assignment will likely take 5-7 pages (single-spaced), depending on the length of the abstracts. It should include:
a paragraph on search strategies
a list of 10 references and their accompanying citation, abstracts, and subject heading cut and pasted from the PsycINFO reference pages.
Note that different web interfaces may display the information slightly differently. The most important pieces of information to include are the title, the year of publication, the author, the source, and the abstract.
a statement of your hypothesis or a narrower research question developed from your review of the 10 abstracts.
about two-thirds of a page outlining the rationale for the hypothesis or narrower research question. Refer to the abstracts you gathered and discuss how you used these to develop a more specific hypothesis. For example, you may wish to model your hypothesis after some aspects of the research in the sources you gathered; or, alternatively, you may look for gaps in the research that do not seem to be addressed in the sources and develop your hypothesis to address these gaps. You do not need to refer to all ten references, just a couple or some sub-set of them is sufficient.
