Focus of your assignment: You are doing exhaustive research on your career of choice:
You will start your paper by explaining the reasons for choosing your particular career path. This does not need to be long or overly descriptive. It serves the function of a kind of hypothesis. These are the ideas, reasons, and feelings you have that led you into this career choice. How does your research help you to flesh out those reasons, give you resources to help open doors, give you information that may open your mind in good and not so good ways about your field of choice?
Points to consider:
Talent. Would you do well on the job? Think of what courses you really enjoy and excel in.
Education. What is required, what the courses entail, what more education can give you. You also want to look into education and certifications that may be required to keep up to date in your field. There may be alternative routes to getting jobs in your field based on experience or internships. Are there schools that have really strong programs in your area of interest? Will they help you with your career goals?
Salary and benefits. These numbers may vary based on location, company, whether you are working in the public or private sphere.
Demand. Is the field and job you are looking into growing or shrinking? What factors affect the future numbers? Are you willing to relocate to get a position?
Geography This can play an important role in many ways. Where you work can affect so many things…quality of life, salary, demand, reciprocity. Is a New York license in your field accepted in another state?
Quality of life. This does not only include salary and benefits. What is life on the job like? What kind of work are you doing most of the day? How many hours do you work? Are they hours you want to be putting in? Are you working in a pleasant atmosphere with people you can grow with?
Personal fulfillment. Will you take pleasure and pride in what you will be doing or are you just waiting for the day to end? Are you spending your days doing something meaningful and engaging? Are you a good fit for the job you have chosen?
Public vs Private. Look into the differences between jobs in the public and private sectors. There are majordifferences in salary and benefits in job security etc. This is an important factor to look into. What red tape is involved in either public or private jobs? What does self-employment look like? How does that impact salary, benefits and taxes? Is the job unionized?
Age. What is the average age of those in your chosen field? Does this affect your prospects?
