You would investigate the “abnormal” (the “Abnormal” non-mainstream by society’s trends, could be for physical or mental challenges, etc.) in terms of how societies have treated those that are assumed to fall under that definition, perhaps physically/mentally/socially/economically. There are many possibilities. You have a few examples to draw from in the novel with the creature as one physically, Victor as one intellectually, and the DeLacey family socially. These would give you some good possibilities.
