Unit 3 Activity: Title IX and Gender Equity in College Athletics
In chapter 3, Schultz discusses Title IX. Toward the beginning of the chapter, she notes that “Title IX has not affected all girls and women in the same ways.” She identifies several ways in which some girls and women are under-representation based on social factors. She also introduces the concept of gender equity and how Title IX is needed “until gender equity is uniformly championed, accepted, and achieved.”
Task: After completing the Unit 3 reading, conduct research on Title IX and gender equity in college athletics. Specifically, look through the NCAA Demographics Database to identify evidence that informs your understanding of gender equity in college athletics. Make sure to look at multiple levels (such as leadership, coaching staff, and students) and multiple sports to determine differences related to gender equity. Also consider how race and ethnicity impacts your findings. Make sure to review at least 3 specific sports under the tab “COACH AND STUDENT-ATHLETE DEMOGRAPHICS BY SPORT”
