Respond to ONE of the following sets of questions. Make sure to answer all questions within the set, referring to
the relevant readings and videos.
4. Traister argues that women’s anger has been both dismissed by men in power and used as a catalyst by women to
seek power for themselves. In some cases, this anger is turned toward the culture in order to confront and change
social norms; in others, it is turned toward electoral politics, and creates a kind of determination to run for office;
and in still others, it leads to a do-it-yourself (DIY)-approach to meeting basic needs, regardless of what’s
happening in the wider culture or political world. Citing the relevant course materials discuss the role of anger in
each type of these responses (cultural change, electoral politics, DIY services) and the venues in which they operate.
In what venues or situations is expressed anger more effective at achieving goals and in what cases is it more
effective not to express that anger? Is women’s anger different from men’s anger, politically? As a general matter,
has the role of anger in women’s political activity been under-discussed? Have the concerns of “angry women” been
dismissed?
