Is world literature, or global literature as this course calls it, a useful category? What does global literature do that studying just one national literature might not?Using examples (various takes on Caliban, for example) or the texts around Spanish colonization of the Americas, or the webs of interconnection that existed between writers of the 1960s…does studying literature on a global scale help us decipher something particular? What…is that? Moreover, you may want to discuss some of the questions we discuss in the final course around ideas of the "subaltern” in Gayatri Spivak’s work, and the question of whether literature speaks for or represents, and if so…in what way. Your paper should be 6-7 pages (7-8 is also fine) and should include a works cited page, which does not count toward those 6-7 pages, a title, an intro and conclusion, body paragraphs, in-text citations, a legible thesis statement – all of those good things.
