It is late June, 1865, and you (set up your identity: a real person or an imagined character? a Southerner or a Northerner? a Westerner?
rich or poor? an urban dweller or
one living on the land? a man or a woman?
an adult or a child? white,
black, Hispanic, native American? an
American-born citizen or an immigrant? a
foreign observer? a farmer or a factory
worker or an artisan or a wealthy entrepreneur?
a Protestant or a Catholic or something else?, etc.) have been asked to
deliver a Fourth of July oration in a nearby town on the subject of American
history. What do you say? What themes will you emphasize? What argument(s) will you make? What evidence will you use? Where do you begin and end the story? What story do you tell? However you choose to answer, be sure to keep
within the context of 1865 and the character/personality you choose to assume.
In other words, you can’t know anything that happened after 1865 and you must
try to “be” the character you have chosen, with all of his/her biases, values,
and views. Be creative and try to write
