We have taken a jump back in time to the beginnings of some of the issues we discussed in Module One. In this discussion we will focus on two of our themes: Land, and Ethnic Identity. Over the next three weeks, answer these questions, using the bold text as your subject line. Respond to at least one different student per week, covering one of the categories each time.
Discuss the acquisition of a land base for this nation.
How did different cultures relate to the land?
How did those differences lead to clashes?
At times, differences led to compromise instead of clashes. The US Constitution is an example of such a compromise.
What were the stakes for various groups affected by the proposed new government?
Did the compromise work for everyone at that time? If so how, and if not, how not? Identify one or more points on both sides of this debate.
Before so many varied groups were gathered on this continent, most of them had fairly limited experiences of “others” and the concept of ethnicity as race had not yet been invented. Once invented, this concept affected membership in the new nation.
What are the key issues, from earliest settlers to later immigrants, that developed between light skin, ethnicity, class status, and becoming American?
What were the stakes for non-white groups involved (willingly or unwillingly) in American nation-building?
