This assignment consists of 2 parts: The Vital Stats data and graph creation, and 2) the Joint Commission data and write-up.
(1) Vital Stats (10 pts)
This assignment will use the birth data from the Vital Stats 2016 document: http://www.flpublichealth.com/VSBOOK/pdf/2016/Births.pdf
Presenting the Data in Graph/Chart Format
Using data of your choosing from the document, create one pie chart and one histogram. The data MUST be appropriate for the graph. Keep in mind, a histogram uses a very specific type of data that is different than a bar graph/bar chart. Use your textbook to help you identify data appropriate to a histogram.
Be sure to provide a title for each graph/chart.
Each axis and each piece of the pie must be appropriately labeled as well.
Sometimes, Microsoft Excel will try to place your data into “bins” to create your histogram. The bin presentation is not what we are seeking for purposes of this assignment. To work around this, instead of selecting the histogram graph type, what I would recommend instead is to create a standard bar graph first. This will give you the presentation you expect except that the bars will not be touching. To get the bars to touch and display continuous data, you will need to right click on one of the bars, select “Format Data Series” and change the “Gap Width” to 0%.
(2) Joint Commission (15 pts)
Identify two hospitals of your choosing anywhere in the country.
Finding data:
Go to https://www.qualitycheck.org/Links to an external site. and search a geographic location for available hospitals. Filter “Accreditation Program” by “Hospital” then click on the hospital name, select the “View Accreditation History” link under the “Accreditation Programs” header, and download the most recent Quality Report for your hospitals.
*Note: The Joint Commission also accredits other healthcare facilities such as Ambulatory Care, Behavioral Health, etc. Be sure you are looking at a “hospital” accreditation.
Answer the follow questions:
For each hospital: Include the date of the most recent full hospital survey AND the accreditation decision awarded. (This is found on the page containing the link to the Quality Report)
For each hospital: What is your overall impression of the facility based on the information contained in the Quality Report? Be sure your discussion includes how the hospital scored on at least one of the National Quality Improvement Goals in relation to state and national averages. (Note: You will need to identify a hospital that includes statistics on the report. Some facilities will say “N/D” for “No Data Available”. If this happens, select another facility that can give you data to compare. You will likely find this primarily in the Perinatal section at the end of the report. Click hereDownload Click here for an example of what to look for under the Hospital Results column.)
Using the internet, identify at least one other accreditation option available to hospitals if they choose not to become accredited with The Joint Commission. Provide a brief summary of the alternative accreditation process and its history.
