1. To understand the changing role of women in the early
nineteenth century, explore the choices made by Anne Elliot throughout the
novel. What choice(s) do you think are the most important ones she makes? How
difficult were they considering her social and familial circles? Be sure to
focus on at least two key scenes.

2. Choose a short passage from the novel (Jane Austen’s Persuasion) that you feel
exemplifies a principle or aspect of Romanticism. Do a close textual analysis
of the passage to support your interpretation.
