1. Select a literary criticism from the database. Print the article before
you begin working with it.
2. Completely read the article. Highlight and/or annotate as you read.
3. Review the reading, looking for the author’s thesis and most
important supporting ideas.
4. Write an opening sentence that states the author’s thesis. (See
model below.)
5. Continue writing an approximately 500-word review that explains
the author’s most important supporting ideas for the thesis.
6. Present the ideas in the order in which they appear in the literary
criticism.
7. DO NOT INCLUDE ANY DIRECT QUOTES FROM THE LITERARY
CRITICISM. You need to summarize and paraphrase (put into your
own words.)
8. DO NOT INCLUDE ANY OF YOUR OWN ANALYSIS OR
OPINIONS UNTIL THE FINAL PARAGRAPH. You are simply
summarizing what someone else has written.
9. This paper should be double-spaced and it should be several
paragraphs in length. Every time you start a new paragraph, you need
to mention the last name of the author (this is your documentation).
11. The conclusion of your summary should present your
evaluation of or reaction (your opinion) to the literary criticism.
10. Note that for a Literary Criticism Review, the MLA Works Cited
information goes at the top.
11. Model your paper like the example below.
