For this assignment, Response Paper #2, you are being asked to respond to a poem from Joshua Whitehead’s Full-Metal Indigiqueer. Up to this point, we have been using many different avenues for entering a poem, situating ourselves among the work, and extracting meaning. We have examined tone, symbol, image, subject and theme, and made larger considerations regarding representation and advocacy. We have responded to primary texts and engaged in secondary sources. Now, its time to get up close, very close, almost excruciating close, to a single poem by way of annotation.
An annotation exercise is when you look at a poem and notice absolutely EVERYTHING. To annotate a poem means to look at each word, each line, the white space between, and write down comments, observations, connections, and anything we can think of that contributes to a poem’s being.
The goal of annotations is not to come up with the exact perfect meaning of something but to inquire, to ask questions, to be in conversation with, and to observe everything a poem is.
For Response Paper #2, you are being asked to annotate any poem (aside from “The Perseids”) in Full-Metal Indigiqueer. You pick the poem, and you do the annotations, either on the actual text itself or on a separate sheet of paper. This can be done is full sentences, half sentences, fragments, phrases, right side up or upside down, in pen, pencil, on a typewriter, a computer screen, in markers, on post-its – anyway you choose.
