Journal 1-Week 02: Disasters Defined

Objective:
During each week of the semester, students will be responsible for submitting one private learning journal entry through Blackboard. Unlike the formal forms of writing completed for graduate classes (an essay or research paper) or work (memorandums, issue briefs, or reports), the learning journal allows students to engage in free writing as a means to explore, organize, and retain materials covered in class. More specifically, the learning journal will enable students to:
• Engage in an active learning activity;
• Understand the concepts contained in the course materials;
• Develop critical thinking and communication skills; and
• Identify connections between their own experiences and the course materials.
Writing Prompts:
This week, students are to write about the relationship between culture and disaster events. Students should relate their discussion to the assigned readings and/or the video: NKH World (2016) The Phone of the Wind: Whispers to Lost Families. How are the experience of the Japanese similar to, or different from, the experiences of those in your community, state, or country? What does this video suggest about resilience?

Overview: During the semester, students will be responsible for submitting private learning journal entries through Blackboard. Unlike the formal forms of writing completed for graduate classes (an essay or research paper) or work (memorandums, issue briefs, or reports), the learning journal allows students to engage in free writing as a means to explore, organize, and retain materials covered in class. More specifically, the learning journal will enable students to:
• Engage in an active learning activity;

• Develop critical thinking and communication skills; and
• Identify connections between their own experiences and the course materials.

Instructions: There are no official instructions; other than students must use the assigned materials to make at least one learning journal entry per week that is a minimum of 600 words by the stated deadline. To help facilitate the process, the professor may provide a series of prompts (open-ended or structured questions) to guide the writing process. If the professor does not provide such prompts, students can use the following phrases to initiate their creative juices:
• The most interesting thing I learned from this week’s readings is …
• This week’s readings relate to a previous week’s readings in that they …
• This week’s readings diverge from a previous week’s readings in that they …
• The thing from this week’s readings that I need to learn more about is …
• My place of employment (community) would benefit if they knew/tried …
• It just dawned on me that …

Additional Advice: The following advice may be useful:
1. Do not begin until you have finished the readings and your reading logs.
2. Do not begin until you have spent time constructively thinking about the material.
3. Do not get bogged down by spelling, grammar and structure. Don’t get it right, get it written.
4. Feel free to make more than one entry per week.
5. Feel free to relate materials to your personal or professional experiences.
6. The content of your learning journal can be used to support other course projects.
