Journal 8: Anatomy of Miscommunication

We often come away from an interaction with another person asking ourselves “what went wrong?”, or shaking our heads thinking “How did that happen?”. Here’s your chance to find out by analyzing just such a situation.
To complete this journal, think back to a conversation with someone where the conversation fell apart. Perhaps there was a misunderstanding, or perhaps one or the other of you felt left out or insulted, or perhaps you just see the world in different ways.
Once you have chosen an appropriate situation…
Describe the situation briefly. You should be one of the participants, but you do not need to name the other person or persons if you would rather not. Make sure you describe the miscommunication, and what happened as a result.
Analyze the breakdown in communication by applying at least three of the concepts discussed in this module.
Discuss what you might do differently in a future situation to prevent this breakdown in communication.
