A narrative is a piece of writing that organizes events into a readable form that utilizes cause and effect to connect one occurrence with another. Essentially, it’s telling a story. For this assignment I want you to tell the story of the 1992 L.A. riots using pieces of reporting. Reporters use interviews and first-hand accounts to reconstruct an event. Use the reporting to write a summary of what happened before, during, and after the riots. Find five sources from the time period and then find five more from the last 5-10 years.
As with the last assignment, you’ll need to write a self-reflection. The self-reflection will consider the differences in reporting and point of view at the time and now. The first paragraph will introduce your main idea/thesis. The thesis should be an argument about what difference, if any, you notice about the reporting from the past and the reporting from the relative present. The second paragraph will be use quotations from your older source to explain the point of view adopted by journalists from the past. The third paragraph will use quotations from contemporary sources to explain the point oof view of the present. The final paragraph will explain what similarities and differences you notice about reporting from the time and reporting from the present.
