Your midterm exam is a critical literature review. I will ask you to respond to a particular prompt, which I will provide to you one week before the due date. I expect that you will review some of the social science literature we examine in class, as supplemented by complementary literature on similar topics. As we will have done in class, I expect you to utilize the existing literature’s theories and findings to compose an argument in response to the overall prompt. The midterm exam is an individual, solitary assignment; it should be completed without assistance from your classmates, or anyone else for that matter. If you have questions, you should ask me. Violation of this rule will result in a zero grade for this assignment, along with the initiation of the University’s academic integrity policy.
Your paper should be at least 1750 words, but no longer than 3000 words. While I do not have strong preferences on formatting, generally speaking the paper should be double-spaced, typed in Times New Roman font, size 12, with 1-inch margins. Please include page numbers. Please do not include any other header than your name and the date. If you are responding to one question from a set, please only indicate what number question you chose. You must consistently abide by a citation style (e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) and include a works cited page that does not count toward the word count. If you write in google docs, please print/share a PDF and upload that version to Canvas.
Your midterm must be uploaded to Canvas by the prescribed date and time. Should you need assistance with your writing, I encourage you to utilize university resources.
Option 1: What shapes the level of judicial legitimacy in a society? To address this question, explain what judicial legitimacy is. Elaborate on the various theories of judicial legitimacy. What opportunities and constraints do courts face regarding their own legitimacy? Discuss the legitimacy literature with additional attention to judicial independence, democratic political participation, and street-level implementation of judicial decisions.
