Write a 600-900 word essay that is divided into three parts according to the instructions below. Your essay does not need an introduction or conclusion.

Paragraph 1: Summarize what a virtue is and how we acquire virtues. You can choose to focus on Aristotle’s account of virtue or you can choose to follow more modern perspectives on virtue.
Paragraph 2: Summarize the concerns Taussig raises about kindness. Why does she think something so apparently innocent and virtuous is actually complicated and potentially harmful?
Paragraph 3: Give your own view: Do you think that kindness is a virtue? If so, describe what the virtue of kindness looks like and how a person acquires it. Is there a way to reenvision kindness in order to avoid the concerns Taussig raises? Regardless of what you think, be sure to give reasons for why you think as you do.
Standards for Papers
You must use at minimum three sources that are appropriate for scholarly use. The assigned essay for your prompt should be one of your sources, but you will need to find two other sources that are appropriate for school essays. Assigned readings for class are acceptable sources. You may cite my lecture notes, but they do not count towards your required sources (i.e. if you use them you still need to find two other quality sources to cite).
You must use in-text citations and have a works cited.
As an undergraduate, quotes should not take up more than 10-15% of your paper. This means quotes should not be longer than 2-3 sentences per page.
Include a word count. Your essay should be between 600-900 words.
In philosophy, we use the first-person. You should say things like “I think” and “I believe” when writing papers for a philosophy class.
