Ethnography Essay Guidelines
You are required to select and read an entire ethnography by a linguistic anthropologist to write a 3-4 page double-spaced essay (5 pages max. is allowed) that discusses the following points:
1. Brief background of the author (who is the researcher and how and why did they get involved with their topic?)
2. Main objectives of the study and methods used to collect and analyze data (What was the author trying to find out? How and when was this fieldwork conducted? What challenges did the author deal with in the field?),
3. Main arguments/findings in the book (What was the author aiming to find out in this research? What are the key points made in the book? What theories or authors are used to understand the findings in a broader context?)
4. Significance/contribution of the research to the field of linguistic anthropology (why are these findings important?)
5. Your personal opinion of the book and writing style and how the book-shaped your views of linguistic anthropology (Would you recommend this book – why or why not?)
The essay should be approx. 3-4 pgs. double-spaced (Times New Roman or similar font) with 1-inch margins. (Note: This means 3 full pages of text minimum. You may go up to 5 pgs. max. if you need more space).
Be sure to give examples and direct quotes from the book to illustrate your arguments. Be sure you have read the ENTIRE book and use examples from throughout the book to support your points.
Please include the bibliographic reference to the book at the end of your paper. For in-text citations, include the relevant page numbers in parentheses; you don’t need to include the author and year since we know you are referring to that book. So instead of (Basso 1996:5), you can just use (5) to show the page reference. If a quote is longer than 2 lines, it should be in a standard block quote format (single-spaced, indented on both sides, and no quotation marks).

Your essay is due on Wed 6/16 (extended from 6/14). Late essays will be deducted 5 pts (half-letter grade) per day up to 5 days late. After this date, assignments not submitted will receive a grade of zero.
