Essay Prompt: As discussed in class, some of the stories featured in the course strongly invoke a desire to become nomadic–no permanent abode, no family, and perhaps even no national affiliation. Castaway on the Moon presents characters who have abandoned families and seek affiliations with people who have no real abode; My Worst Friend’s characters dream about leaving Korea; the main character of “Bite of Rockfish” repudiates both traditional family and nationalist values. With the postmodern turn Korea has taken, how do these stories that identify strongly with nomadism reconfigure, in your mind, the urban and the rural? Respond within a reasonable length of 1500 words.
